The City University of New York’s Citizenship Now! (CN!) is the largest university-based naturalization assistance organization in the nation. Our attorneys and paralegals offer one-on-one consultations to assess participants’ eligibility for legal benefits and assist them in applying when qualified. The National Initiative is built on CUNY Citizenship Now!’s proven model of providing cost-effective pro se legal assistance through strong partnerships and volunteer utilization in undeserved counties in Arizona, Colorado and Nevada.
Under the guidance of the Supervising Attorney, the Staff Attorney will provide on-site supervision of the provision of legal services, overseeing application assistance and legal consultations on immigration-related matters under CN!’s pro se scope of services. The attorney will be based in the greater Phoenix area where s/he will supervise the work of up to two paralegals and an administrative assistant. The attorney will work to advance the project by cultivating existing and new partnerships. Thus, s/he will engage in activities like trainings, outreach, interviews, information sessions, and tabling.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Counsels participants on immigration law and related issues.
Manages high-volume case load concerning completion and review of applications/petitions.
Reviews and authorizes release of applications and petitions completed by paralegal staff.
Assures that program services and policies and procedures are consistent and followed by staff and volunteers.
Interprets immigration laws, rulings, and regulations for staff and community partners.
Represents CN! to a variety of organizations and at community and professional functions, as well as assisting with community outreach, group presentations and workshops while maintaining expert and up-to-date knowledge of immigrants’ rights issues and problems.
Actively cultivates relationships with existing and new partners.
Collaborates in the development of innovative tools and resources that meet the needs of our participants and partners, such as fact sheets, checklists, and toolkits.
Reports regularly to the Supervising Attorney on the provision of services and outreach to the community.
Participates and promotes CN! programs, such as impromptu events to respond to community needs (e.g., DACA & DAPA, TPS, etc.)
Uses all provided tools and materials to ensure data recollection to generate reports for funders.
Monitors deadlines and schedules, shifts priorities based on changing needs, and works well under pressure.
Maintains strict confidentiality of all client and company information at all times.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
J.D. and bar admission.
Some immigration experience and/or passion about immigrant issues preferred.
Fluency in Spanish.
Excellent supervisory skills including the ability to oversee and guide the work product and professional development of staff and volunteers.
Capacity to follow organization’s policies, implement and use legal and administrative systems and procedures in coordination with different departments.
Ability to work in an open environment with limited privacy.
Excellent communications, interpersonal, writing and legal writing skills.
Desire to help inform the local immigrant community through workshops and presentations.
Ability to establish and maintain relationships with community organizations and other immigration providers.
Proficiency or openness to learn and utilize technology, online case management, and administrative systems.
The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented, highly flexible, and self-motivated.
Ability to work independently as well as with a team in order to further the mission of CN!
Willing to work on weekends and evenings if necessary.
Salary and Benefits:
Full-time position available (35 hours per week). However, we are also considering candidates interested in a part-time position 3 days a week (19 hours a week)
Salary range: $40 - $45 per hour, commensurate with experience
Full-time position provides comprehensive benefits. Part-time position is limited to statutory benefits
