As the largest university-based local government training, advisory, and research organization in the United States, the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government offers up to 200 courses, webinars, and specialized conferences for more than 12,000 public officials each year. For nearly 90 years, the School of Government’s mission has been to improve the lives of North Carolinians through nonpartisan, engaged scholarship that helps public officials understand and improve state and local government. The School of Government seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member as its principal advisor to city clerks and clerks to boards of county commissioners. The faculty member will assume primary responsibility for the School’s many clerk-related programs that provide clerks with credit towards certification or recertification. Responsibilities of this position will include teaching, advising, research, and publication in the following areas: (a) general ordinance authority and enforcement, including emergency management ordinance authority and enforcement; Work is centered in Chapel Hill but requires occasional travel and consultation around the state. Faculty appointments are year-round (rather than for the nine-month academic year). Zero to five years of attorney experience, ideally working with local or state governments. Commitment to public service, ability to work effectively with diverse audiences, and a record of, or demonstrated potential for, practically focused and engaged teaching, advising, and scholarship required. |
