Snell & Wilmer, a full-service law firm with more than 450 attorneys practicing in 15 locations throughout the United States and in Mexico, is seeking a Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to join our leadership team in our Phoenix office.
As the Director you will develop and execute on specific strategies to embed principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion into the firm’s day-to-day operations, including in our attorney hiring, learning and development, retention, and client development initiatives. To achieve these goals, you will work closely with the firm’s DEI Committee, the Attorney Recruiting and Professional Development team, firmwide affinity groups, Practice Group Leaders, and our Marketing and Human Resources professionals.
This position is preferably based from our Phoenix office, but we may consider other office locations.
Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Designing, developing, and implementing strategies to foster a diverse and inclusive firm environment
- Providing administrative leadership and support to our DEI Committee, Women’s Initiative Network, SNELLGBTQ, First Gen Forward, and additional firmwide affinity groups
- Building trusted relationships and serving as a DEI resource and advisor to the firm’s lawyers
- Representing the firm at law schools, conferences, and other legal professional association events
- Collecting, maintaining, and reporting on the firm’s DEI data to internal colleagues; overseeing participation in industry surveys regarding diversity and inclusion and contributing to client RFPs in a timely fashion
- Managing the firm’s DEI budget covering sponsorships, events, and programs, with the goal of maximizing return on investment and using talent and resources efficiently
- Actively monitoring progress made on the firm’s diversity goals, including gathering utilization metrics, feedback from internal affinity groups, and collecting and supporting diversity hiring and attrition statistics
- Collaborating with internal firm colleagues, including:
- Legal recruiting colleagues, to assist the firm’s recruitment and hiring of diverse attorneys. This includes developing and executing on pipeline (pre-law) initiatives and best practices to support effective and equitable law school and lateral hiring.
- Attorney development colleagues, to support processes and plans to develop and retain our diverse attorneys. This includes working with practice group leadership to ensure the firm’s staffing reflects our commitment to DEI, and designing and implementing networking, mentorship, sponsorship, and both formal and informal training opportunities.
- Marketing and business development colleagues, to effectively communicate the firm’s diversity commitment to internal and external constituents. This includes reporting the firm’s DEI activities on the firm’s intranet, website, and other publications, and in response to client requests for proposals.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; J.D. or other advanced degree is preferred
- A minimum of five to eight (5 to 8) years of increasingly responsible, directly related to DEI experience in a professional services firm or law school environment
- Client-service orientation and demonstrated ability and preference to work collaboratively
- Interpersonal communication and public speaking skills, including delivering high-quality presentations and facilitating group discussions
- Strong professional judgment and the ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information
- Ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and take ownership of responsibilities
- Supervisory experience is preferred
- Occasional travel to firmwide offices is required
